Dr. Skylar W. Bakko, DC's Expert Contributions
  • Should I workout if my neck hurts?

It’s not a great idea to do so. You could injure your neck more. I would get evaluated and treated by your chiropractor if warranted. READ MORE

  • How long does a pinched nerve in the neck last?

That’s something that could last a lifetime unless you get it corrected by your chiropractor. READ MORE

  • Is a heating pad good for neck tension?

Heat should work well for neck tension. READ MORE

  • What will happen if a pinched nerve goes untreated?

A pinched nerve is a sign of a greater structural and neurological problem. If it’s left untreated it could lead to degeneration in the spine as well as nerve damage. READ MORE

  • How do I stop my shoulder from hurting when I sleep?

That’s usually an indication somethings wrong with your shoulder. I would personally evaluate the shoulder for muscle dysfunction/weakness. That’s a common cause of that pain while sleeping. Skylar Bakko, DC QNCP PAK BFM READ MORE

  • How long does a chiropractic adjustment take to work for shoulder pain?

Shoulders can take time as they are very unstable joints. It all depends on the severity of the injury. I’ve gotten great results in just a few visits, and I’ve also seen patients that take months to heal. Skylar Bakko, DC QNCP PAK BFM READ MORE

  • Can I see a massage therapist and a chiropractor for shoulder pain?

Absolutely, you can. It's good to combine both for a lot of pain problems, including shoulder pain. Skylar Bakko, DC QNCP PAK BFM READ MORE

  • When should you get shoulder pain checked?

If the pain doesn’t go away within a week, I would definitely get it checked out right away. Skylar Bakko, DC QNCP PAK BFM READ MORE

  • Can bursitis be treated by a chiropractor?

Given the right tools and techniques, a chiropractor can do great work with bursitis. Skylar Bakko, DC QNCP PAK BFM READ MORE

  • What does a chiropractor do on the first visit?

Typically, they’re going to take a detailed history to start trying to figure out the cause of your pain. Then, they’ll do an exam of the back for you. If they can figure out exactly what’s going on, they’ll start treatment that day and give you a reasonable idea what to expect going forward. Skylar Bakko, DC QNCP PAK BFM READ MORE

  • Can spinal misalignment cause anxiety?

In short, yes. There are some major neurological pathways that get disrupted when there are certain areas of the spine “out of alignment.” They can activated the “Fight or Flight” part of your nervous system which can lead to anxiety. Getting those areas treated properly can help shut off the Fight/Flight pathways and stimulate relaxation/stress relief. Skylar Bakko, DC QNCP PAK BFM READ MORE

  • Can chiropractors help anxiety?

I highly recommend chiropractic for anxiety, especially if you find a chiropractor that practices functional neurology and/or brain-based wellness. Skylar Bakko, DC QNCP PAK BFM READ MORE

  • What is the difference between a physical therapist and a chiropractor?

I often suggest both. Both have valuable tools for musculoskeletal issues. Chiropractic is a neurologically-based profession, personally I’ll look to the brain and nervous system to stimulate pathways to heal that area quickly. A lot of chiropractors only focus on the biomechanics of the body/injury. I can’t necessarily speak for Physical Therapy, but they do an excellent job diagnosing structural injuries and providing rehabilitation programs for those injuries. READ MORE

  • What could lower back pain mean?

Pain is often the last thing to appear in repetitive motion or degenerative process. It could be from little stressors over time such as lifting or sitting long periods. The pain could be a result of nerve or joint irritation in your spine. Personally, I’m always going to the chiropractor to get my back/spine evaluated if I have an issue like that. READ MORE

  • Could the pain in my back be caused by kyphosis?

It absolutely could be related as that type of curve can be stressful on your spine. I would recommend adjustments along with specific back exercises and stretches for that issue. It will take time to change those curves and that posture. Think 6-12 months. READ MORE

  • Why are chiropractors recommended for asthma?

Chiropractors will look to the nerve power to your lungs and other areas of your spine that might be blocking lung function. I often look to the adrenal glands as they produce the steroids your body needs to open up your lungs. I’ve also seen asthma improve when identifying and avoiding food sensitivities. READ MORE

  • What is the best way to get my muscles to relax?

I’m always going to suggest getting that evaluated by your chiropractor, but a nice, cheap, home tool you can use is putting two tennis balls down a sock and tying the end off so the balls stay next to each other. Lay face up with the tennis balls under your neck. You can roll that up and down to gently massage those muscles. READ MORE

  • Is a chiropractic consultation needed after a sports injury?

They will evaluate your injury and look to provide treatment the allow that injury to heal correctly as well as help to get the injury to heal faster. Old injuries left untreated will likely repeat themselves. READ MORE

  • Back pain for two months. What could be the cause?

It could be from many reasons. Often people underestimate how bad sitting is for our brains and bodies. That’s a common reason for back pain with no injury history. Improper lifting and even the exercise if your form is incorrect could cause pain over time. A poor mattress could cause it too. READ MORE

  • Persistent pain in neck. Should I visit a doctor?

I would absolutely visit my chiropractor for an evaluation. Getting a DO on board is also helpful in accident injuries. Every doc will have their own way or evaluating and treating, but the most important thing is that you understand what’s wrong and the path they’re going to take to help you get well. Common treatments from a chiropractor might include: spinal adjustments, electrical muscle stimulation, rehab exercises, and even massage (by a massage therapist). READ MORE

Get to know Chiropractor Dr. Skylar W. Bakko, who serves patients in Centennial, Colorado.

Dr. Bakko is a skilled chiropractor who is the Founder of Baku Chiropractic & Functional Medicine in Centennial, Colorado. Committed to shifting the health paradigm in his community, he has chosen to devote his life to the healing arts with the hope of changing the world, one person’s health at a time.

With the knowledge and expertise to help one heal naturally, he believes that the body is capable of self-healing, self-regulating, and self-maintaining. He uses a combination of unique techniques, advanced technology, and compassionate care to help people of all ages and conditions reach higher health. Along with general chiropractic care, he specializes in brain-based wellness with a focus on thyroid problems.

Born and raised in Marysville, Michigan, it was there that Dr. Bakko initially began receiving regular holistic care at a young age. It was his family chiropractor who inspired him to become a healing practitioner himself.

While he knew he wanted to pursue a career as a natural healer, his decision was solidified when his family chiropractor saved his mother’s life. His mother had been experiencing seemingly random symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, poor sleep, digestive problems, muscle pain, and hair loss, when their chiropractor detected a potential problem with her thyroid.

Following his recommendation, Dr. Bakko’s mother was checked by her doctor. She was initially diagnosed with an infection. Their chiropractor urged her to get a second opinion. It was then that she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Thanks to their family chiropractor, it was detected early enough to cure and to this day, she remains cancer-free.

As he grew older, Dr. Bakko’s passion for natural health grew with him. He has since earned his Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa and completed hours of study on Brain-Based Wellness.

Chiropractic is a form of alternative medicine that mainly deals with the diagnosis and treatment of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine. A chiropractor uses spinal adjustments, manipulation, and other techniques to manage patients’ health concerns, including neck pain and back pain. They aim to improve patients’ functionality and quality of life by properly aligning the body’s musculoskeletal structure and enabling the body to heal itself without the use of medication or surgery.

Outside of the office, Dr. Bakko enjoys spending quality time with his wife, Susana. He also loves to exercise, play the drums, go on hikes, and bowl on Saturday nights.
