Get to know Hematologist Dr. Kelty Ruth Baker, who serves patients in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Baker is a highly skilled hematologist practicing at Houston Methodist Dr. Mary and Ron Neal Cancer Center, located within Houston Methodist Hospital.

Her clinical interests span a broad spectrum, including anemia, hemochromatosis, Hodgkin’s disease, leukemia, lymphoma, mastocytosis, myeloma, platelet and coagulation, sickle cell anemia, and Von Willebrand disease.

A 1993 graduate of Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Baker went on to complete her internship, residency, and fellowship training at the same institution in 1994, 1997, and 1999, respectively. There, she gained valuable hands-on experience and delved deeper into her area of expertise, further advancing her professional development.

Following her training, Dr. Baker attained board certification in internal medicine and hematology through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) in 1998 and 1999, respectively. The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Remaining dedicated to advancing patient care and staying at the forefront of her field, Dr. Baker is an active member of the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Hematology, the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, and the American Medical Association.

Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Physicians specialized in hematology are known as hematologists or haematologists. Their routine work mainly includes the care and treatment of patients with hematological diseases, although some may also work at the hematology laboratory viewing blood films and bone marrow slides under the microscope, interpreting various hematological test results and blood clotting test results.
