She could be in trouble. If she is drinking excessive amounts of alcohol and reluctant to go to a hospital because she is worried about withdrawal, she could have liver disease. People with liver disease can have bleeding from the gut which may show up as blood from the butt or throw up blood so much that they die from it. Alcohol withdrawal can be treated in the hospital; easily and then she should go to detox center to get back to normal.

If it is longstanding, it would suggest a "lazy colon" or a type of irritable bowel syndrome with predominant constipation. Are you older than 45? If so, you would be a candidate for a colonoscopy. You are probably passing mucus and not pus. Try a gentle laxative such as miralax (available without a prescription). Physical activity, fiber in diet, and drinking enough fluids will help in the long run. If the problem persists, you should see your doctor. There are medications to help this problem once an obstruction has been ruled out.
