Is a walking boot better than a cast?
The boot is usually okay if you wear it. (Unfortunately, it is easily removed, which leads to patient non-compliance at times.)

I'd recommend seeing a podiatrist or dermatologist for proper identification (diagnosis)

That is surgeon dependent. If the pins are exposed, likely 2-4 weeks.
