There are 2 ways to fix them. Either we repair with minimally invasive or endovascular surgery by placing a stent inside the artery, or we repair directly with open surgery (traditional surgery).

If the aneurysm is tender or if it reaches a certain size (usually 5 cm) then it should be repaired. There are 2 ways in which we repair the aneurysms. One of them is a minimally invasive surgery that requires putting stents inside the aneurysm to repair it. The other way we fix these is by doing open surgery which is a big operation done in the hospital. Both of these are very effective and safe.

The risk of having an aneurysm is that if they get too large, they can rupture. This becomes a very significant medical emergency. The main take-home message is that if you have one, get checked. If it is big enough, get it fixed.

Other individuals arrive with more severe disease which include spider veins and big bulging varicosities. Depending on the extent of the disease at presentation, vein ablation is at least a starting point for eliminating all the varicose veins.

More commonly after the ablation you will probably need additional treatments which include what we call phlebectomy (removal of the large bulging varicosities), with or without sclerotherapy (injection of the smaller veins or spider veins).
