Your sugar is still running high because you are insulin resistant and your medicines do nothing to help with insulin resistance. Giving extra insulin in your situation is like pouring fuel on the fire. (Since you are on glipizide I’m assuming you are a type 2.) You should ask your doctor if you could switch to GLP1 medications (Victoza, Ozempic, Trulicity) or SGLT2 medications (Invokana, Farxiga, Jardiance). If finances are an issue, then Metformin and Pioglitazone are powerful as well. Metformin is especially good at helping overnight sugars). Also you should have a sleep apnea test, because if you have sleep apnea, it increases cortisol overnight which contributes to insulin resistance, high sugars and Weight gain.

Numbness and tingling are nonspecific symptoms that can signal a pinched nerve, a neurological disorder such as multiple sclerosis, neuropathy from diabetes, or neuropathy from b12 deficiency or from some other cause.  You can have your primary care doc do a glucose tolerance test (Where you drink 75 g of glucose and then have your sugar checked at baseline, 30, 60 and 90 minutes later), and as long as that is normal, you should see a neurologist.

The Golo Pill is mostly just a mild laxative. It’s safe but it’s not magical in any way. It won’t help you at all unless you do the diet that is recommended by Golo, which is the same diet your diabetes doc has likely been telling you to do for years- low starch, lots of non-starchy veggies, and adequate lean protein. (Which is a diet that will help you lose weight even if you don’t spend $90 on the Golo pill).

There are no known at home remedies to help a person grow beyond their mid-parental height. (Beyond getting 8 hrs of sleep a night to maximize growth hormone production) Women usually stop growing a year or two after they get their period. If you haven’t gotten your period yet, there are some medical therapies they can give you to delay the onset of your first period… but after you get your first period your epiphyses (the growing ends of bones) close and your height is pretty much set.

That depends entirely on how hard you are willing to work to keep your sugars under control. If you are super diligent and keep your sugars as close to normal as possible, and follow up with a doctor, then it is quite safe to have a baby, as long as you have a good partnership with your medical team and are under close supervision.

The tendency to become hyperthyroid, either because of hyperactive nodules or because of autoimmune Graves’ disease, does run in families. So it is particularly genetic, but weakly so. For example, with autoimmune diseases, the tendency to get ANY autoimmune disease is inherited genetically, but WHICH autoimmune disease, if any, is mainly luck of the draw... which virus happens to set off your immune system at an unlucky time...

Yes, patients with low grade hemolytic anemia such as yourself will have falsely low A1c levels.

Things that can falsely lower A1c include:
Chronic Kidney disease
Mechanical Heart Valves
Sickle Cell Disease
Hemolytic Anemia
Blood loss (GI bleeds, etc)
Splenomegaly

There are also situations where A1c can be falsely elevated:

Things that can falsely elevate A1c:
Carbamylated hgb
Uremic Acidosis
Hgb F
Hypertriglyceridemia
Hyperbilirubinemia
Iron deficiency anemia
Opiate addiction
Lead poisoning
Alcoholism
High dose Aspirin

In the United States, if we suspect that A1c levels are discordant from actual blood sugars, we can do a professional CGM to get something called a GMI or “glucose management indicator” - this is what a patient’s A1c would be if their hemoglobin and rate of cell turnover were “normal”
We can treat based on the actual blood sugars and disregard the erroneous A1c.

The most important thing is to model good behavior! Don’t bring any junk food or processed starches into the house, neither for you or for the child. Take the child out for runs and nature walks. Cook together in the evenings so they won’t be a fast food junkie as an adult.

If she is doing the HCG diet, she may only be eating 500 calories per day of pure protein.... in that case she will not need any mealtime insulin and will only need a very small amount of basal insulin to survive. You can be called a Type 1 diabetic any time your c-peptide is <1.0 - which means your capacity to make insulin is very low... but there is a spectrum between Type 1s who truly make zero insulin, and those who still make a tiny bit. The Type 1s who truly make zero insulin will go into Diabetic ketoacidosis within a few hours or at most a day of skipping all insulin dosing. The Type 1s who still make a tiny amount of insulin can sometimes get by on extremely low carb diets like your friend and still be ok. However they should always be in contact with their doctor (preferably an endocrinologist) and inform their doctor whenever making such extreme changes in their diet and insulin dosing.

If it is not making any hormones, we usually just monitor it and otherwise leave it alone unless it is causing problems with vision.
