Since entering the healthcare world and becoming a mom, I quickly realized the lack of knowledge and support that is out there for new moms and postpartum women of all types. Regardless on if you are becoming a mom yourself or a surrogate helping a couple grow their family, your postpartum journey lasts forever. In my opinion there is a lack of communication between the OBs/midwives and the postpartum moms that results in women not getting adequate care to heal their bodies after delivery. My ideal and first recommendation for postpartum care is not just a 6 week evaluation to make sure your uterus has returned to its normal position, but one that goes beyond that and evaluates the function and strength of the pelvic floor. This evaluation is done by pelvic floor PTs who are trained to check the tone and function of the whole core. Moms need to learn how to re-train their core and pelvic floor by deep belly breathing and kegal activation. Chiropractic care is essential for postpartum, not only for evaluating the external muscles of the pelvis, but also checking for separation of the rectus abdominus. Chiropractic adjustments and care goes beyond just checking the physical changes of a postpartum women’s body, but also resetting the nervous system stressors that arose during the 9 full months of growing a baby. Finally, chiropractic adjustments help to reduce tension in the neck and shoulders from breastfeeding, holding your baby, and carrying a car seat.

A postpartum body is different than the body a mother had before, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be better. You do not have to wait until postpartum pain or symptoms develop before you seek guidance from a chiropractor or pelvic floor PT to start gaining your mom strength.
