Insulin Resistance

1 What is Insulin Resistance?

Insulin resistance refers to the reduced ability of the cells to respond to the action of insulin.

To compensate for the inadequate response to insulin, cells of pancreas secretes more insulin.

This condition may lead to diabetes over a period of time as increased levels of insulin may not help in controlling the elevated levels of sugar in the blood.

The resistance of the cells to insulin is seen with both endogenous (body’s own insulin) and exogenous (administered through injection) forms of this hormone.
