1 What is Hectorol?

Generic: Doxercalciferol

Hectorol is a drug used in the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic kidney disease.

This drug is available as an oral liquid-filled capsule containing 2.5 micrograms or 0.5 microgram of Doxercalciferol. It is also available as an injection solution containing Doxercalciferol 4 micrograms in 2 milliliter.

The capsule should be taken by mouth as instructed by your doctor. Do not crush or chew the drug because it may diminish its effects. This medication should be taken with a full glass of water unless your doctor tells you otherwise. You should swallow the drug whole.

Interactions:

Hectorol may interact with medications such as:

  • Digoxin
  • Glutethimide
  • Rifampin
  • Azole antifungals including:
    • Ketoconazole
  • Macrolide antibiotics including:
    • Erythromycin
  • Anti-seizure drugs including:
    • Phenobarbital
    • or Phenytoin
  • Bile acid sequestrants such as:
    • Cholestyramine
    • or Colestipol
  • Mineral oil
  • Orlistat
  • Products that contain calcium, magnesium, phosphate, or vitamin D

Side Effects:

There are no side effects known aside from a possible allergic reaction in people who have previous or unknown hypersensitivity to the drug.

Watch out for signs of allergic reactions such as:

  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Swelling

Warnings:

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have the following:

  • Allergy to Doxercalciferol or to vitamin D products
  • Heart problems
  • Liver disease
  • High calcium blood levels
  • High phosphate blood levels
  • Seizure
  • Pregnancy or lactation
