Limbitrol is drug that act on central nervous system to treat anxiety or nervous tension-induced mental depression.

2 What to Know Before Using

Your doctor will inform you of what you need to know before using Limbitrol.

Before taking this drug combination, the risks and benefits for your body should be discussed with your healthcare provider.

Inform your healthcare provider for any allergic reactions to these drugs or any other drugs, foods, dyes, preservatives, or animals. Carefully read the label of non-prescription drugs for any possible allergic reaction or contraindications. No reported benefit to children with depression using chlordiazepoxide and amitriptyline combination. Suicidal tendencies have been noted in children, teenagers, and young adults when taking the drugs.

Not recommended for use in children due to toxicity. No demonstrable geriatrics-specific problems found in studies that would limit the usefulness of chlordiazepoxide and amitriptyline combination in the elderly. Age-related liver, kidney, or heart problems in the elderly require an adjustment in the dose for patients receiving this drug combination. Adverse effects were noted in the use of the drug combination but studies regarding pregnant women or animals are still inadequate. Studies determining infant risk when using this drug combination during breastfeeding are still inadequate.

Consult with your healthcare professional before taking this drug while breastfeeding.

In cases of combination therapy, your healthcare provider may want to change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary. Inform your healthcare professional if you are taking other drug to aid in their decision not to treat you with this drug or change some of the other drugs you take.

Intake of specific food or using alcohol or tobacco with this drug combination is associated with an increased risk of certain side effects. Your healthcare professional can give you special instructions about the use of food, alcohol, or tobacco. Inform your doctor of any other medical problems, especially alcohol or drug abuse or dependence as there may be a chance to develop dependence on this drug combination.

Other problems that this drug combination may worsen include: Bipolar disorder or Blood problems or Difficulty in urinating or Emphysema, asthma, bronchitis, or other chronic lung disease or Enlarged prostate or Glaucoma or increased eye pressure or Heart disease or Mental illness (severe) or Myasthenia gravis or Epilepsy or history of seizures, or Hyperactivity. Kidney or liver disease causes higher blood levels of chlordiazepoxide and amitriptyline which increases the chance of side effects. More serious problems may result from overactive thyroid or Stomach or intestinal problem when using this drug combination.

3 Proper Usage

To use Limbitrol properly, you must follow all instructions given by your doctor.

Take this drug immediately after meals or with food unless your healthcare provider has told you to take it on an empty stomach, to reduce the symptoms of an upset stomach.

Your healthcare provider will track your progress. This drug must be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Additional or prolonged doses could increase the chance of side effects. The dosage of the drug will depend on the medical problem for which you are using the medicine.

For adults with depression, an oral dosage form (tablets) is prescribed at 5 milligrams of chlordiazepoxide and 12.5 milligrams of amitriptyline or 10 mg of chlordiazepoxide and 25 mg of amitriptyline, taken three or four times a day.

Your healthcare provider may adjust your dose as needed. The dose is usually not greater than 10 mg of chlordiazepoxide and 25 mg of amitriptyline taken six times a day. Use and dose this drug combination for children with depression must be determined by your healthcare professional.A missed dose should be taken as soon as possible. However, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule if it is almost time for your next dose.

Store the drug in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep from freezing. Keep out of the reach of children. Dispose any outdated or expired drugs and ask your healthcare professional for the proper disposal of the drugs.

4 Precautions to Take

Before using Limbitrol, there are some precautions you must take.

Your healthcare professional should check your progress regularly and help reduce side effects by adjusting your doses accordingly. The chlordiazepoxide and amitriptyline combination is contraindicated with or within 14 days of taking a drug with monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor activity (e.g., isocarboxazid [MarplanВ®], phenelzine [NardilВ®], procarbazine [MatulaneВ®], selegiline [EldeprylВ®], or tranylcypromine [ParnateВ®]). A common reaction to these contraindications is an extremely high blood pressure or convulsions (seizures).

Consult with your healthcare professional before you stop taking the drug and he may also taper the drug slowly before stopping completel to prevent any withdrawal symptoms such as headache, nausea, and/or an overall feeling of discomfort.

This drug combination potentiates the effects of alcohol and other CNS depressants such as antihistamines or medicine for hay fever, other allergies, or colds, sedatives, tranquilizers, or sleeping medicine, prescription pain medicine or narcotics, barbiturates, medicine for seizures, muscle relaxants, or anesthetics, including some dental anesthetics. Consult with your healthcare professional before taking any of the aforementioned while taking the drug combination. This drug combination may affect blood sugar levels in diabetic patients. Report any changes in the results of your blood or urine sugar tests to your healthcare professional. Prior to any medical tests, inform your healthcare professional about your intake of this drug combination.

Chlordiazepoxide and amitriptyline combination may cause agitation, irritability, or display other abnormal behaviors which may affect the result of the metyrapone test. Suicidal tendencies have also been noted. Inform your healthcare professional immediately if you notice any side effects. Inform your healthcare professional before having any surgery, any dental treatment, or emergency treatment that you are using this drug combination to prevent any unwanted and prolonged effects of CNS depressants such as dizziness, light-headedness, drowsiness, or becoming less alert than they are normally. This drug combination can last overnight and until the morning as it may cause some people to feel drowsy or less alert on arising. Refrain from doing anything dangerous if you are dizzy or are not alert. This drug combination may cause dryness of the mouth.

Use sugarless candy or gum, melt bits of ice in your mouth, or use a saliva substitute for relief. This drug combination also may cause your skin to be sensitive, be sure to limit exposure to the sun and wear appropriate protective clothing and apply sun block of at least SPF 15. If the side effects persist or gets worse, consult with your healthcare provider.
