1 What is Neupogen?

Generic: Filgrastim

Neupogen is an injectable drug used to boost immune resistance by stimulating the production of white blood cells that fight off infections.

This drug is often used in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, those receiving bone marrow transplantation, those undergoing peripheral blood progenitor cell collection and therapy and patients with severe chronic (long-term) neutropenia (low levels of neutrophils in the blood).

Instructions:

You should read the product information leaflet before using this medication. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist. This medication is usually given through injection once a day until the ideal blood counts are reached.

Your dosage is based on your medical condition and the way you will respond to treatment.

Interactions:

Filgrastim may interact with medications such as lithium. Tell your doctor about prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use with Filgrastim.

Side Effects:

There are no side effects known aside from a possible allergic reaction in people who have previous or unknown hypersensitivity to the drug.

Watch out for signs of allergic reactions such as:

  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Swelling

Warnings:

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have the following:

  • Allergy to filgrastim
  • Sickle cell disease
  • Heart disease
  • Spleen problems
  • Other blood disorders such as myelodysplastic syndrome or congenital neutropenia
  • Certain skin disorders such as psoriasis
  • Radiation therapy
  • Pregnancy or lactation
