Methocarbamol is a muscle relaxant. It is used in the treatment of discomfort caused by acute painful muscle or bone condition along with rest, physical therapy, or other measures.

It works by blocking nerve impulses (or pain sensations) that are sent to your brain.

It is available in the form of tablet, only with your doctor’s prescription.

2 What to Know Before Using

Before starting the treatment your doctor should be informed about condition such as,

Allergy

Inform your doctor if you are allergic to any food, preservatives, dyes, or had an allergic reaction when you used this drug before.

Children

There are no adequate studies done which proves Methocarbamol’s harmful effects in children older than 16 years of age. It is not expected to cause different effects than adults. However, safety and efficacy have not been established in children younger than 16 years of age.

Elderly

This medicine does not cause any different side effects or problem than it does in younger adults. However, it should be used with caution in patient who has kidney or liver diseases.

Pregnancy

It is a category C drug. It may cause harm or abnormalities in an unborn baby. It is safe not to use it during pregnancy.

Breast Feeding

Methocarbamol is not known if it can pass into breastmilk or not. If you are using it while nursing, discuss the potential risks with your doctor.

Drug Interactions

Methocarbamol may interact with other drugs. Your doctor should be informed of any other medicines which you are taking. He may want to change the dosage or drug.

3 Proper Usage

Use it exactly as your doctor directed. It comes with an instruction. Read and understand it carefully.

Dosage

It is different for different patients. Dosage mentioned below is an average dose. You must follow your doctor’s command.

For relaxing muscles

  • Adults: At first, three tablets of 500 milligrams (mg) or two tablets of 750 mg (total dose of 1500 mg) four times a day.
  • For children, dose is determined by doctor.

Missed dose 

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember it. If it almost a time for your next dose skips the miss dose and continue your daily schedule. Do not double the dose.

Storage

Store it at room temperature.

Keep it away from children.

4 Precautions to Take

Your doctor should check your daily progress at regular visits. He/she may want a blood or urine test to check for unwanted effects.

Methocarbamol may cause

  • drowsiness,
  • dizziness, blurred vision,
  • light-headedness.

These effects may be worse if you take it with food. Use Methocarbamol with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.

Avoid drinking alcohol or taking other medications that cause drowsiness such as

  • sedatives,
  • tranquilizers,
  • antihistamines,
  • narcotics,
  • barbiturates while taking Methocarbamol.

It will add to the effects of alcohol and other CNS depressants.

Methocarbamol can change the color of your urine.

5 Potential Side Effects

All medicines have some side effects. Some people may experience none or minor side effects.

Consult with your doctor if they become problematic or frequent.

  • Dizziness or spinning sensation
  • Drowsiness
  • Headache
  • Confusion
  • Memory problems
  • Loss of balance or coordination
  • Nausea,

  • Blurred vision or double vision,
  • Eye redness
  • Sleep problems (insomnia)

  • Mild itching or rash

Symptoms of overdose are,

  • Shaking or jerking of one area or side of the body.
  • Sweating
