Birth control after 50?

I'm over 50 and got an IUD put in but it hasn't stopped my period I'm actually getting it more often than before. Either spotting or a regular period. My PA has to put me on some low-dose pills and after I finish them it starts up again. I'm either bleeding or spotting. Is there a pill I can take instead or should I get the IUD removed and try again in a few months to get another one put in?

I expect you had an ultrasound done &all cultures were negative=20 if no ultrasound done , consider to have one done to check=20 1) Proper IUD placement & endometrial thickness 2)culter for cervical infection Including Mycoplasma Consider to see a gyn physician for good pelvic exam & appropriate advise best anjan chaudhury Md FACOG Brookline Mass
There's a lot of information I would want to know to adequately answer your question. If you are perimenopausal, then bleeding problems are common, and the IUD, the Mirena specifically, will help with this, but it takes several months work. Have you had an ultrasound or an endometrial biopsy? It's important to rule out other reasons for heavy bleeding. I wouldn't necessarily take the IUD out, but I would get an ultrasound and see a gynecologist for further management. Take Care.
Hey there! I would say this depends on which IUD was placed and how long you've had it before I could answer this in a more helpful way. Let me know! - Dr. Curtis
