Gastroenterologist Questions

Can I have a beer sometimes

Hi,

I suffered from acute pancreatitis in 2020 May and again 2020 october. In the latter case my gallbladder was removed as non-aggtessive growth (tumor) was found on one side of it. I did not have one drop of alcohol in between these two occasions. On both cases I was hospitalized and condition was quite bad but not ICU.

I have never been a big alcohol consumer. In the range of a glass of wine over dinner max 2-3 times per week. I am male, 50, nordic. With some overweight.

The doctors cautioned me to never have a drop of alcohol again. Which I have not since the first pancreatitis. I have no stomach issues since removal of gallbladder. When I had pancreatitis on both times I was on a low carb diet, and was on escitalopram.

My logic tells me that the infected gallbladder with a tumour caused my pancreatitis. Not alcohol. Could I not quite safely have a glass of wine after three years of complete alcohol free life?

Male | 50 years old
Medications: Escitalopram, simvastatin, asthma inhalator

I cannot say with confidence what caused or did not cause your prior pancreatitis. In general, if there were no gallstones in the gallbladder when it was removed, then the gallbladder would not usually be a cause of pancreatitis unless there was a lot of sludge.
It seems reasonable to try some modest intake of alcohol. I would be careful and just drink one glass at a time, maybe 1-2 times per week.
