Infectious Disease Specialist Questions Syphilis

Do I have syphilis?

Hello! I’m a 26 year old female with very limited sexual experience. I’ve never had penetrative sex before or to my knowledgeable come in contact with anyone with syphilis. However, after an std check I was told by my primary care doctor that I had/may have syphilis. I took the test again around 3 months later and came back non reactive? How is it possible to test positive but negative? I’m having trouble understanding the test results (see attached) and would love help understanding what’s going on with me.

I also have a small raised bump near my vaginal opening. It painless and looks to be filled with white liquid? Is this syphilis? Or something else? (Please see attached) I don’t have a gynecologist at the moment but plan to get one.

Thank you for your help!

Thanks for the question. False positive tests for syphilis do occur. Repeat the test one more time to be sure it is truly negative. The bump is not syphilis. It could be Herpes, or just an ingrown hair cyst. Please see your gynecologist.

In a very short answer ask your doctor to check FTA-ABS (blood test) if negative then you don’t have syphilis and if positive then you do have it. I am unable to see which test you had but typically screening is usually done by either RPR or VDRL and these are non specific
