Pain Management Specialist Questions Addiction

Do painkillers always become addictive?

My mother in law has been using painkillers very frequently for her back. She has recently gotten her dosage increased. Could she be addicted to them?

No. Addiction is a behavior pattern, not a consequence.
The physician should be able to carefully assess that. Also, when patients ask for higher dose, it is important to determine if the underlying cause of pain has worsened or changed before increasing the dose. Have interventional options been considered?
