Can you use pepto-bismol instead of Maalox?

Yes you can
Yes, though they contain different ingredients so they treat different things in different ways. Maalox has two compounds that buffer acid primarily.
Pepto-bismol contains bismuth and salicylate which can treat infections and inflammation, not necessarily reduce acid directly.
