How do you care for a baby with a heart murmur?

I have a newborn baby. I want to know how do you care for a baby with a heart murmur?

It depends on what type of murmur. Some are benign and can be diagnosed by the pediatrician. Others are not and require referral to a pediatric cardiologist.
There is no special way of caring for children with heart murmur. Have them see a cardiologist, and if murmur is of no concern, treat them normally and enjoy time with them.

Great question. As a pediatric cardiologist, we examine the patient. Most murmurs in babies are what we call functional murmurs or normal noises of the blood flowing through the heart and there is nothing that needs to be done. If we detect a murmur that we believe there is heart disease associated with it, we order an ECG/chest X-ray and often an echocardiogram.
Hello,

Most (80%) newborn heart murmurs are what is called as “innocent.” Which means a structural abnormality in the heart or a heart disease is not something you worry about instantly. An Echo and a Pediatric cardiologist’s opinion can reassure you of the same. If he is feeding well and looks well, most likely it is an “innocent murmur.” But a confirmation can be attained an Echo and an expert opinion on the same. As a mother, you just watch out for his/her feeding, and no breathing/thriving issues.
