After jaw surgery, your jaws will be wired shut for about 4 weeks, during this time you can only have liquid diet, anything that you can suck in with a straw. After that, when the wires are removed, you can slowly increase your diet to purée then soft then regular, usually for another 4-5 months.
In order to provide the best answer to the question, more information is needed. Jaw surgery can be an all encompassing collection of different types of surgery, from an extraction of a tooth to orthognathic surgery wherein surgery is performed on the facial bones to correct abnormalities. The timing of when you can return to chewing will depend upon the type of surgery you are undergoing and the type of dietary instructions provided.
