How to relieve constipation?

I am a 62 year old male. Not on any regular meds. I just started taking an over-the-counter stool softener. Yesterday morning, I started with bad constipation. I cannot have a bowel movement. Whatever is trying to come out, feels like it is too big to come out. Whenever I strain to try and have a bowel movement, it hurts a lot and it feels like the feces is only getting to the edge. When I wipe myself, I only get very little of it on the tissue paper. What can I do to help my situation?

The stool in the rectum is of large size and rather hard, so as you try to pass it, it can cause an anal fissure, which hurts a lot. You can certainly try other laxatives like dulcolax and miralax, but a manual disimpaction of the stool may be needed if this goes on for a extended period of days to weeks.
