Pathologist Questions Pathologist

I have a question about lab results?

A specimen received with red cells in contact with serum. Certain results may be affected. Clinical correlation is advised to determine need for recollection.

What’s happening is that as soon as the whole blood sample is collected, the laboratory technologist using a centrifuge, separates the RBCs from the plasma as soon as possible. These results represent interactions of cells with serum/plasma, altering its chemical composition and affecting test results. The time frame to do the blood/plasma separation is within 2 hours. Human blood serum does not contain white blood cells, red blood cells, or platelets. The red coloration means that there is hemolysis. Thank you.
This is a notice mainly for your doctor to determine if your test needs to be repeated. Labs have to provide this disclaimer so the doctor can be fully informed on how to treat you.
