Dentist Questions Infections

Infection in tooth,swelling alot!.

Emergency room gave me antibiotics and hydrocodone yesterday, swelling is considerably worse today. Should they have drained all the nasty stuff, or will antibiotics kill it and it go away by itself? Cuz swelling is so bad, that the pressure by my eye is tremendous, it feels like my eye gonna pop out[figuratively]. Very uncomfortable and worrisome

Male | 30 years old
Complaint duration: 3day
Medications: Clindamycin 150mg and hydrocodone 5mg
Conditions: Asthma, allergic to sulfa and penicillin family

Please go visit an oral surgeon ASAP.
If the emergency room has decided not to drain there is a reason for it and most often it is because the abscess is not localized enough and is spread out. That does not mean that you might not need some incision and drainage if necessary. However, as long as you are not having difficulty breathing or swallowing, you should complete the course of medications prescribed and see a dentist or doctor immediately for further treatment.

You have to see an oral surgeon to drain the infection if it does not get better in 24 hours with antibiotics.
The draining does relieve the pressure. I would go to a general dentist in the area and have them address the area. Usually the emergency room is going to focus on getting you out of pain. Hope this helps.
I recommend to see the Dentist to see how big your infection inside your mouth ,also the medication is not enough, you need 300 mg Clindamycin for at least 7 to 10 days.
Antibiotics may help somewhat short term depending on which one was prescribed. However, the cause of the swelling and infection is the tooth and if it is not removed ASAP, it will still keep giving you problems. Infections that are around the back top teeth and result in swelling into the eye area are particularly worrisome because they can lead to a very bad complication called cavernous sinus thrombosis which is life-threatening. I highly recommend you find a dentist to remove the tooth for you immediately.
I recommend that you return to the emergency room. You may need IV antibiotics. Swelling to the eye is a concern. Be well.
Antibiotics will not "kill" the infection. The offending tooth must be treated. You have a dental infection that must be treated by a dentist either extracting the tooth or getting a root canal. The upper jaw is very well vascularized and you run the risk of developing a severe medical
emergency problem if left untreated. Find a local dentist and have the treatment done ASAP.
When to see a doctor. See your dentist promptly if you have any signs or symptoms of a tooth abscess. If you have a fever and swelling in your face and you can't reach your dentist, go to an emergency room. Also go to the emergency room if you have trouble breathing or swallowing.
Imagine a rusty nail in your foot that you left for months because it wasn't hurting much. Then imagine your foot starts swelling with gangrene infection. Then you go to the ER and they give you antibiotics for your foot. That, in effect, is what is happening to your mouth. In the case of your foot, it would NEVER heal & get better with the nail still embedded in your foot.SO, you need to take care of the infected tooth which is the cause of the swelling. If it's a pretty good tooth you need, then go to an Endodontist who will clean the infection out of the tooth and perhaps put it in a drain for the swelling. If the tooth is too badly damaged to keep, just have your dentist remove it and he will clean out the socket. The swelling in your face can close up your eye in an upper tooth and can cut off the ability to breathe in a lower tooth infection.
