Is constipation normal after a bypass surgery?

Is it normal to be constipated after bypass surgery? I had bypass surgery over two weeks ago, and I want to make sure the two aren't related.

The narcotics used cause constipation. Consult Functional medicine and start Magnesium citrate 800 mg softgel daily for now.
You may be taking Meds that are causing your constipation. Talk to your doctor and make sure the problem is taken care of. It is important that you do talk to your doctor.
It is common after any surgery that requires pain medication that has CODEINE or even HYDROCORDONE. You can avoid this by drinking a cup of Senna tea (Slimming green tea) every other night or twice a week.

Constipation is common after surgery due to the use of anesthesia and the use of narcotic pain meds after surgery. Delayed bowel moments are even more common after a gastric bypass due to decreased oral intake.

1. Patients have relative dehydration after surgery. Dehydration will dry out your stool and make it harder to have a bowel movement. You should be drinking at least 60 oz of water every day.
2. If you have been taking prescription pain medication (narcotics), these will make you constipated. Two weeks after surgery, you are hopefully taking no pain medication, but if you have to, I would recommend taking Tylenol.
