Hello, Thank you for your question. We you have to evaluate you and take foot x-rays if needed. Please call our office 973-817-9577 or on our portal drtotten.com for an appointment.
Thank you
Obviously I believe a podiatrist since they only see foot & ankle pathology
Hello, for foot or ankle pain it is best to see a podiatrist. Anything above the ankle would be best with an orthopedic specialist.
A podiatrist treats foot and ankle issues and is generally well versed in both conservative and surgical treatment options. An orthopedist that specializes in foot and ankle will also treat similar issues but may be more surgically oriented. Of course, it will also depend on the individual doctor.
Whichever one would be your preference.
Podiatrist
Podiatrists and Podiatric Surgeons have more extensive training and experience in evaluating and treating the human foot, ankle, and lower leg than most orthopedists. A Podiatric Surgeon who is Board Certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery is recommended.
Unless the orthopedist has done a fellowship in foot and ankle which is beyond general orthopedics, you would be best served by a podiatrist.
I would recommend what you personally want, a podiatrist is specially trained in foot and ankle only. An orthopedic is trained for 5 years in general ortho so the entire body and they do fellowship for a year in foot and ankle. A podiatrist a younger one does 3-4 years of foot and ankle. Iā€™m a podiatrist personally so I have some bias.

Always an orthopedic surgeon foot and ankle specialist. We have much better training.

Dr. Patterson
A foot and ankle orthopedist is trained to look at the entire body and how it can cause or affect the causes of foot pain. They have a lot more rigorous training, are held to a very high standard and typically at the top of their field.
Good luck!

A Podiatrist will always be trained better in issues and pathology of the foot and ankle than any orthopedic surgeon. In fact, if you look statistically at which orthopedic surgeons focus on the foot and ankle, you will often find they are the bottom of the barrel in their specialty
Podiatrists are trained specifically in foot and ankle pathology. I am a podiatrist, and would recommend you make an appointment with a foot and ankle surgeon (podiatrist) for diagnosis and treatment options
