There are very good treatments for alcoholism but, unfortunately, once you become a severe alcoholic, you always have to think that you are an alcoholic, even if you didn't drink for the rest of your life, thinking in that way helps you keep sobriety. .Also, the success of the treatment will depend mostly on your compliance with the treatment. Having a sponsor helps.
You have to be committed to quit drinking and a psychiatrist can give you meds to decrease the craving or alcohol to have less effects or some of them cause you to have severe reaction if you were to use any alcoholic products, not only drinking you could have a reaction to perfume, cough medicine with alcohol or even your mouth wash with alcohol in it. I also believe in AA and you got to be committed to quit if you are ambivalent it is not going to work or you have been coerced to be in treatment by the law, you will not have a better outcome than if you are committed to stay sober. I wish you good luck.
