Nephrologist (Kidney Specialist) Questions Kidney Stones

Is there any way to pass a kidney stone more quickly?

Once in a while, I get kidney stones. They are caused by my furosemide. Is there any way I can make them pass faster or less painfully?

Oral fluids
Furosemide Dora does not cause kidney stones. You have to find the reason for your kidney stones by "stone analysis " and also needs metabolic work for stone formation. Seems like you may be getting dehydrated from your furosemide.

Ways to prevent stone formation is by :
- Having good urine output, more than 2 liters per day
- Low salt diet
- Low protein diet

Also, by knowing the reasons for your stone, there may be specific treatments too. Small stones can be passed by "expulsive therapy" like flomax/ IV fluids, that usually your doctor gives you while in the hospital. Hope this will help you.
There are ways to prevent formation of kidney stones. Once you have a stone evaluation or a 24 hour stone risk profile checked, it will give a clear idea of the kind of stones you have and you can be treated with medications and dietary modifications to prevent this in future. For now, drink plenty of water and limit salt in the diet.
Please do get evaluated for a definitive answer. Instead of wanting to pass stones, make a diffference in your outcome by preventing stone formation.
Certain medications can help. For example tamsulosin
Drink lot of water
A medicine (Flomax) can help to pass stone.
Also depends on size of stone

There is a good chance that a kidney stone may pass faster and less painfully, if the kidney stone is less than 5 mm and the patient increases his fluid intake and takes a medicine called Flomax which relaxes the smooth muscle and improves urine flow.
Hydration and Tamsulosin may help pass stone. Depends on size and
location.
Furosemide in not a known cause of stones. May need better evaluation
for cause of same

Increased oral fluids may help. There is also a medicine, Tamsulosin, some urologists use to help the stones pass. All the time, follow a low salt diet and modify the things in your diet associated with the stones, based on your doctor's recommendation.
