Abdominal Surgeon Questions Nausea and Vomiting

Loss of appetite and nausea

I had an open appendectomy and bowel resection as my appendix had perforated over a year ago. I still have no appetite and get nauseous after a few bites of food. Is this normal after surgery? During my appendicitis I had severe vomiting and nausea.

Hi, this is not usual. Most likely you developed a 'stricture' at the site of surgery. Suggest: Go back to the surgeon or a gastroenterologist and have a B/E and SBFT (small bowel follow through) done.
No, I don't think it is normal to have problems with nausea after eating more than 1 year after that surgery. The nausea may have started as a result of everything that you went
through, but now the nausea is its own separate problem. We often call this functional nausea and it can be treated with medications. An evaluation by a GI doctor is reasonable to make sure it is not something else.

Gastrointestinal symptoms lasting a year after an appendectomy usually indicate another coexisting condition. I urge you to schedule an evaluation by a different specialist, mainly a gastroenterologist.
