Should you go to the emergency room for low hemoglobin?

I have low hemoglobin levels. Should you go to the emergency room for low hemoglobin?

I would not go to the emergency room unless you feel light-headed. I would see your primary care physician and get a referral to a specialist if they feel it is necessary.
Hemoglobin levels of 8.0 and below should be evaluated. If there is a sudden drop in your hemoglobin levels compared to your baseline, this should also be evaluated. If you have low hemoglobin and are actively bleeding and/or have signs and symptoms of anemia, this may warrant an emergency room visit.
No! If this is something chronic the ER is no place to go for a diagnosis. You need a competent doctor who will find the cause and outline a proper treatment for the anemia.
I will no longer be checking this email at the end of June when I leave my position at CNE. For urgent issues please contact the staff at the Affinity Hematology/Oncology Office in Pawtucket. They will have my contact information.
