Many people have increased stiffness and soreness in the lower back after sleeping more than 6 hours. The intervertebral discs are more full of fluid in the morning and when they are compressed when you first get up, there is often more pressure in that area. It usually takes about 45 minutes of being upright before the stiffness subsides. Another problem could be your mattress. A mattress that is too soft or too hard can cause a sore back.
Back pain can be attributed from activities performed up to several days before onset, gradually increasing spinal, positions taken while sleeping, etc. To answer your question more accurately, the best course of action is for a doctor to take your full history, examine you and to take further diagnostic tests such as x rays or an MRI.
My first thought is the sleeping surface is old and no longer supportive of your spine. Second, is the mattress to soft for your body size and present weight. Thirdly, stomach sleeping eventually results in neck and lower back problems, as sleeping on your back on on your side, with a pillow between your knees is better for your back.
bad mattress, most likely
The most direct answer would be a question of how old and soft is your mattress. Also, are you sleeping alone, with a partner, or with animals? Do you sleep on your back, side or face down and how many pillows do you use? Does the pain reduce once you are up and moving around? Have you had injuries either from a vehicle accident, sports injury, falls, etc? Are you active or do you sit most of the day what is your sitting posture?
It could be the position you are sleeping in or the mattress itself. Either of those things can cause excess pressure on different parts of your spine and lead to pain.
