Adolescent Specialist Questions Pediatrician

What is wrong with my son?

My son is 4 years old. He is very short and he has a toenail that keeps turning black and falling off. His stomach seems large and tight and he complains of pain in his ribs. He wants water to make it feel better, he has been drinking more than normal.

please take him to your pediatrician first
Sorry to hear about the trouble with your son. I'm afraid I am not the right doctor to address your question. A pediatrician is the right person to approach about your young son.
Dear patient,

Sorry for your boy's health problems. The thirst could be a manifestation of diabetes. You should see his pediatrician for a complete physical and laboratory evaluation.

Respectfully,

Marvin A. Leder, MD FACP FACE
Your son has multiple separate problems:

-He is short - your primary may run tests and send you to an endocrinologist
-His toe nail is black - if it is only one, your primary will examine and send you to a surgeon or a podiatrist
-His ribs hurt - your primary will examine and either treat him for costochondritis or get an X-ray and send to a surgeon
-His abdomen is large - he may be constipated, have an enlarged organ or a tumor - your primary will decide what to do
-He drinks a lot of water - your primary will check his urine and decide next steps

Your child may be sick. Go to his primary as soon as possible or to an emergency room.
