What will ER do for high blood sugar?

I have high blood sugar. I want to visit ER. What will Er do for high blood sugar?

Depends on several pieces of information you can gather yourself:

1. Glucose is above 400? If yes, then go since you will need IV fluids and more likely insulin IV or sq.

2. Does urine have ketones in excess? If so, go to ED since you may be in DKA.

3. Do you have usually good control (sugars less than 180 most of the time)? If yes, then go to ED; serious intercurrent events can make the sugar go high in patients who usually have good control. These may be heart attacks, infections, etc.

Give you insulin and bring the high sugars down. Do labs to make sure that you do not have any acid build up.
The management of high blood sugars depends on multiple variables, for example: how high is the blood sugar, the presence of ketones, the ph (how acid) is the blood, etc.
