When should I be concerned about constipation?

I am a 53 year old female. I want to know when should I be concerned about constipation?

1 Answer

Constipation should be addressed by a PCP or GI doctor if it does not respond to over the counter laxatives such as Miralax, dulcolax, MOM, etc. A bowel movement less than every 3 days is usually considered abnormal, but if laxatives work to produce a bowel movement every three days or more frequently, then a medical work up is often not necessary. Any prolonged period without a bowel movement, e.g., 1 week or more, especially if accompanied by pain/discomfort, should be evaluated by a physician.
