When should you worry if your child is not talking?

My daughter is 2 years old and still not talking. When should you worry if your child is not talking?

Early intervention is extremely important for speech and language development. You should seek out a Speech and Language Pathologist near you, who can evaluate your child. If therapy is deemed necessary, you will play a huge role by modeling words and sounds for your child at home, at the grocery, library, etc. Pointing and saying the words to items in your home and elsewhere, reading books, and asking simple questions about the who, what, when, where, etc., are all things you can do together to increase her speech and language. Please locate a licensed SLP near you at: ASHA.org/profind
Click "Find an SLP" and enter your city/town information.
Good luck!

Some children are naturally late talkers but with no words at 2 years old I would have a pediatrician look at her and get a referral for a speech language pathologist. You can also find an early intervention speech language pathologist private practice in your local area to get a diagnostic evaluation performed. Better to try early than wait. Make sure you are also reading 20 minutes a day every day. That exposes the child to 1 million words per year. There is a correlation between vocabulary acquisition and exposure and early preliteracy skills and you want all of that exposure early.
