Sleep Medicine Specialist Questions Antidepressants

Are anti depressants recommended for people with sleep issues?

I have suffered with insomnia for as long as I can remember, the condition carried on since I graduated from college, 10 years ago. But I have been diagnosed with depression recently, and my doctor wants me to go on antidepressants. Are they recommended for people who also have issues with sleeping?

Depression is among the most common causes of insomnia. Even depression that is largely inactive can still manifest as insomnia in some patients. Managing depression, often with medication, is both frequent and
generally beneficial. I would encourage you to also ask your psychiatrist or treating physician about adding cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia to the depression medication.
