Pediatrician Questions Antibiotics

When is an antibiotic absolutely necessary for children?

My child is sick often. He typically comes down with a mild cold or flu, which he gets from school. Our doctor almost never gives him antibiotics, unless he sees that he's not getting any better. When are antibiotics necessary, and when should they not be given to my child? What are the guidelines with this?

Antibiotics do not help viral illnesses and cause resistance, so when you need them they will not work. They can also get rid of normal bacteria and cause yeast infections, C. Dif, diarrhea, and other problems. We sometimes think antibiotics are a quick fix, but they can make you worse if you do not have a bacterial infection.
