Surgeon Questions Appendectomy

Are there any side effects after appendectomy?

My doctor believes that the best option for my appendicitis is an open appendectomy. Are there any side effects if I have the more invasive option?

A laparoscopic appendectomy is clearly the best technique in most circumstances. Unless there are extenuating circumstances such as ruptured appendix with peritonitis, most people can be discharged within 24 hours or less. And open appendectomy usually offers no real advantage and the recovery is longer.
The standard of care for an appendectomy is for it to be performed laparoscopically. I have trained at several facilities and practiced at several others and do not know of anyone still doing routine open appendectomies. That being said, there are still some select indications (such as multiple previous operations or a perforation/rupture/abscess).

Risks of an open operation compared to a laparoscopic one include a higher risk of a wound inection, hernia, pain, and prolonged recovery.
