Can a relaxing massage hurt my back?

My friend recently had a massage and felt some pain in her back soon after. I want to have a relaxing massage too, but I'd like to know can it hurt my back?

If there is a poor and no medical history discussed there is a possibility a pre-existing condition is made worse. Too much pressure can also or pressure for too long of a duration can also effect things. Without knowing any history or modalities/technniques used by the therapist as well as knowing if they are a Licensed Massage therapist/ Registered Massage Therapist it’s tough to know what happened.
Pain after massage occurs when a therapist doesnt take adequate time warming up the muscle and works too deeply. Also pain after a massage is normal because manuplation of the tissue occured. However if you are concerned about possible pain try communicating with the therapist to work slowly and gently. Great relaxation can come from this approach.
If you have never had a massage before or it's been a while since your last one, massage can make you feel sore after. It also depends on the pressure level or how long you spend in one area. Even though you are laying down while someone is rubbing/needing muscles doesn't mean your muscles are not reacting to the techniques. Our bodies are amazingly reactive organisms.
Yes, if the massage therapist doesn't warm the tissue first, before going deeper in the tissue. I can cause pain afterward. Make sure they do more gentle rubbing motions, and general strokes before pinpointing and going for the deeper tissues.
