Ear-Nose and Throat Doctor (ENT) Questions Acid reflux

Can acid reflux cause issues in my throat?

I've been having issues with acid reflux for a majority of my adult life. I think it's because of my diet more so than anything else. Normally, I would take a tum or some other antacid, which would work for a while, but I'm worried that my acid reflux may actually burn my throat. I only heard this from my mother, who heard it from her doctor. What kind of issues can acid reflux cause in my throat?

Sore throat, throat clearing, cough, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, sensation of too much mucous or lump in throat just to name a few
Hello,

It is a risk factor for esophageal and voice box cancer if uncontrolled. It can also create ulcers and voice changes.

Symptomatic reflux causes a great deal of issues with the posterior portion of the throat and the larynx. Usually the symptoms are symptomatic with acid reflux and heartburn situation which can be alleviated with the use of Tums or other antacids and also with over-the-counter medications such as famotidine and/or omeprazole.
Laryngeal pharyngeal reflux is extremely common in patients causing a great you will of throat clearing and feeling of irritation and posterior nasal drainage and discharge, which is usually alleviated with the dietary treatments, avoidance of acidic foods and coffee and chocolate as well as avoiding eating meals, 2 hours before bedtime.
Yes. Reflux can cause burning, a lump sensation, throat clearing, tissue inflammation/irritation. Reflux can affect the larynx as well with hoarseness, etc. Generally you would decrease caffeine intake, limit alcohol, stop smoking, avoid meals within 6 hours before bedtime, decrease chocolate and peppermint. All of this is online. if overweight, lose weight. Take prilosec or nexium twice a day for three weeks. See if this makes any difference. Could see your PCP for referral to ENT or gastroenterology.
