Anesthesiologist Questions General Anesthesia

Can anesthesia negatively affect my heart?

I already have a weak functioning heart as it is, so I'm nervous about my appendectomy since I know I'm going to be under general anesthesia. Would anesthesia make my heart function worse?

Yes, especially if you have a moderate to severe heart condition.
Yes ,it’s possible if you already have a failing heart.
Anesthesia can affect the heart negatively by depressing the contractile function of the heart as well as may affect the conduction system of the heart. Usually, there are counteracting medications given during anesthesia to minimize the negative effects of these anesthetic medications, however, if the patient is predisposed to multiple medical comorbid conditions, then it is in the best interests of the patient to avoid general anesthesia and select regional anesthesia only.

You need to give more specifics - your test results, echo, stress test, valves. Too many issues to answer this general a question. Suggest you speak with the anesthesiologist who will be taking care of you and has access to all of the necessary information to give you any reasonable kind of answer.
