Geriatric Psychiatrist Questions Dementia

Can puzzles help with dementia?

My grandmother has the first signs of dementia, and we want to slow down the symptoms before it gets worse. My mom suggested puzzles, but my grandmother is not interested and would rather watch TV. Can puzzles help her memory though? How can we get her to do them?

Any mental engagement can help. Find out what she liked in the past. There are also medicines and she needs a full neurological evaluation. There are some treatable forms.
Puzzles help concentration but not memory. Your grandmother may not have the perceptual skills and attempting to put puzzles together may be frustrating her. Try engaging her in short activities that you participate in along with her, such as coloring a simple picture or playing a simple game of tic tac toe.
