Ear-Nose and Throat Doctor (Pediatric) Questions Hearing loss

Can swimming with ear plugs cause hearing issues?

My son is 12 years old and swims a lot. I have him wear ear plugs so water doesn't get into his ears, but they don't always help. But I noticed that he seems to have problems hearing out of his left ear. Could this be from swimming with ear plugs?

Ear plugs typically don't cause problems, but if they push wax down in the ear canal to the point of it blocking the ear canal, that can cause hearing loss. He should have his primary care provider look at his ears, and get referred to an ENT if needed.
In general, you shouldn’t need earplugs while swimming unless you are prone to outer ear infections. Earplugs may also push wax in, and that can give him a clogged sensation. Your pediatrician should check it out and see what is the status of his ears And send to an ENT doctor if needed.
