What causes water accumulation in the lungs?

My neighbour was recently admitted in the hospital due to breathlessness caused by water accumulation in the lungs. What causes this condition? Is it preventable?

There are many causes of fluid in the lungs or in the chest cavity, between the lungs and the chest wall. Sometimes the fluid backs up from heart problems, kidney failure, liver failure, cancer, pneumonia, blood clots, autoimmune diseases. The key is to have a good diagnosis and treat the underlying condition.
Usually, this is caused by the heart not functioning properly, resulting in heart failure. It is treatable with a variety of medications depending on the specific condition. A cardiologist (heart specialist) would be the best person to address this type of condition.
