Ask around for Surgeon. Normally an academic/university hospital is good.
Check with your insurance to see if you have to go to a certain hospital that you must attend. You can also check which providers are included in your plan. Once you know that, then find a provider by location so that it is convenient for you, which makes it more likely that you will comply with appointments. Once you have a name, then google the name for reviews. The make your final decision once you meet the provider in person.
The record of the hospital and the doctor and, most of all, if you are not at ease with the doctor, do not use them. If the hospital is not a quiet and clean place, go elsewhere and be sure to check their rating.
Ensure that you are surgeon is board-certified in their specialty. Ensure that the hospital is accredited by JCAHO. That should be a minimum criteria for choosing a physician and a facility. Also ensure that both the surgeon and the hospital are in your insurance network unless you are willing to pay cash or out-of-network fees.
For hospital see where it stands from infection risk.
All hospital are graded on that.
Depending on type of surgery you will have also the hospital graded on surgical procedures and complications rate.
Follow your appointment and meet your surgeon before, make a list of questions you will have and discuss it with your surgeon.
Once you meet the surgeon feel free to ask any and all questions. You should feel comfortable in his/her presence. Also do visit his / her website and read patient testimonials
Look at surgeon's training and experience. You want a compassionate doctor when you visit. Look at the hospital credentials. MBSAQIP certification is a good accreditation.
