Hematologist (Blood Specialist) Questions low platelet count

Platelet clumping

As a part of routine cbc check, my platelet count was significantly low nearly 20000. Other parameters were normal. I am not experiencing any symptoms. So I had to do a peripheral blood smear. As a result, blood smear shows platelet clumping. And it suggests platelets in adequate numbers. Rbc and wbc are normal in morphology. Is this normal? What are the conditions that causes platelet clumping? Is there anything to be concerned with? I have been having this trouble for the last two cbc check.

Platelets can clump sometimes if an EDTA test tube is used, in this case, blood should be tested in citrate or heparin tube and it should be normal. There is nothing wrong with your platelets.
No worries. Platelet clumping is a not uncommon situation that has no clinical significance if recognized. Generally caused by antibodies in the blood that can be bypassed by drawing your blood in a blue top tube.
