Anesthesiologist Questions Anesthesia

Do you need anesthesia for a tonsillectomy?

My 14-year old son was suggested to have a tonsillectomy because he gets sore throats so frequently. Would he have anesthesia for this procedure?

Yes, a tonsillectomy typically requires general anesthesia with a breathing tube.
Yes, a tonsillectomy is done under general anesthetic. I always recommend to get it done over summer break so they don’t miss too much school.
Absolutely will have anesthesia. A hundred years ago they were done in the doctors office with no general anesthesia. Nobody would even think of doing a tonsillectomy without general anesthesia these days and there are no surgeons left who would even be willing to try to do it without anesthesia.
