Gastroenterologist Questions Gerd

Can having green tea help me with my GERD?

I am told that green tea is very useful in treating digestive issues. Can it also help me treat my GERD? I'm currently on medications, but if there's something else that can help, that'll be great

No, there is no evidence that green tea can treat GERD or any other specific GI problem.
Green tea has almost as much caffeine as regular coffee and I would not drink it with GERD

Tea and coffee contain caffeine, which is known to relax the lower esophageal sphincter and worsen acid reflux.

Green tea has been reported to help with a precancerous condition known as Barrett’s esophagus but only when used in large amounts during the day.

For my patients with GERD I suggest decaf tea and decaf coffee.
As long as Green Tea is caffeine free it is ok to drink. The list of food to avoid are Caffeine, Peppermint, Fried and Greasy food, Chocolate, Tomato based food, Citrus fruits and Alcohol.
