Dermatologist Questions Hypopigmentation

How do hypopigmentation and vitiligo differ?

I'm 40 years old, and I thought I was developing vitiligo on my face but when I showed it to my doctor, he called it hypopigmentation. How do hypopigmentation and vitiligo differ?

Vitiligo is a specific type of hypopigmentation. All hypopigmentation means is a lightening of the skin. But the cause of your skin whitening is how we classify it into a disease state.
By history, physical exam including woods lamp evaluation, and confirmed with a biopsy.
