One must be careful with this one because many times, a patient thinks that gas is causing pain, but it's not gas that is actually the source of the pain. For example, if you bloat and get a distended abdomen after eating, this is often interpreted as having too much intestinal gas, but in reality the cause is excessive fluid in the bowel, not gas. One cannot tell the difference. If you have pain that is relieved by flatus, then this is much more convincing for gas pain. To answer your question, if gas is really the source for pain, it should last only seconds to minutes since gas moves very rapidly through the GI tract.
They resolve when your bowel has been able to get rid of excessive gas.
