Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Questions Jaw Surgery

How long does your jaw stay wired shut after surgery?

I'm 27, and I'm going to have jaw surgery soon and I know that my jaw will be wired shut for sometime after the surgery. How long are the wires on for?

Often, with the way we do that surgery today, you shouldn't need to be wired shut at all. If so, it should be for a very short period of time. They should review that with you at your pre=op appointment.
It does not necessarily have to be wired shut at all. There are techniques which allow you to open and close immediately with no need for wiring.
It would be unusual to have your jaw wired shut in this day and age. That being said, if it must be done 4-6 weeks is typical.
