Untreated...can linger for weeks

Pink eye is usually caused by a virus. If you have pus coming out, see an ophthalmologist. If it lasts more than a week to ten days, see an ophthalmologist. It could be a herpes infection.
There are many different causes of "pink eye". Some benign, some that could cause significant eye damage.
I recommend you have your eye doctor evaluate what is causing redness and discomfort
